Gutter brightening

Gutter brightening

The black streaks on the outside of your aluminum gutters aren't dirt, they're oxidation that won't come off with a wash. Brightening is a chemical treatment that strips the oxide and restores the original aluminum finish. Industry-standard term, often miscalled "whitening."

Why brightening, not whitening

It's the oxide layer, not dirt.

The technical name for what's on your gutters is aluminum oxide. A chemical reaction between the metal and the air over time. No amount of soap and pressure will lift it. You need an acid-based cleaner that breaks the oxide bond.

Done correctly, the gutters look like the day they were installed. Done incorrectly, you etch the metal and stain the siding. I've done hundreds of these. The wrong way is unforgiving.

Gutter brightening questions

Common questions for this service.

Aluminum oxidation. Over years, the metal reacts with air and forms a black film that runs in vertical streaks where water flows off. Standard cleaning won't remove it. You need a chemical brightener.

Not when handled properly. I rinse drips off the siding immediately, tarp the landscaping, and post-rinse everything around the gutters. Fifteen years, no damage.

Typically 2 to 4 years before noticeable streaking returns, depending on sun exposure and rain frequency. Annual gutter cleaning slows the oxidation rebuild.
